‘Gay sex is not a crime,’ says Supreme Court in a historic judgment
As a psychiatrist working in Indore, I have attended to so many people of the gay community due to their psychological problems. The distress they go through, the ambarassment they go through. The existential questions they have about themselves and their identity have always bothered them. On hearing about today’s judgment, all those faces crossed my thoughts.
This decision was long due and as a mature Indian society we should accept it wholeheartedly. We have to understand that sexual orientation is natural and being a homosexual is not a matter of choice. Further, it cannot be modified with medicines or therapy and all such failed attempts are very emotionally traumatic for the person concerned.
